Hi guys, Neil Waterhouse. This month marks the anniversary of when I started selling on eBay 23 years ago. So, I thought I’d share with you my absolute top eight secrets for selling on eBay. This week’s secret is called the five-minute rule. And this secret’s one of the most powerful business and life-changing rules that I know.
The five-minute rule
The five-minute rule has not just helped me sell millions of dollars of products on eBay, but also helps me with almost every other aspect of life as I’ll share with you. So let’s launch straight into the five-minute rule. Imagine if you just purchased this Lego set, and your new goal in life is to get this Lego set assembled as fast as possible. But for many people here are the problems. Problem one, they’ve never built a Lego set like this before.
How do you carve out the time in your busy life
Problem two, how do you carve out the time in your busy life to build this Lego set? You might have a full-time job, kids to look after, kids to take the school, netball practice, football practice, et cetera, et cetera. Problem three, they’ve tried to do things in the past, like build Lego sets, but they’ve never got it finished. This is the same scenario that many people go through when they start selling on eBay.
The solution is exactly the same
And the solution is exactly the same – the five-minute rule as I’ll show you. With the Lego set, imagine if you open the Lego instruction manual at page one, and then every day you spend just five minutes only working on the next step only. You start at page one and you do not move to page two until page one is completed.

Think about it, if you do just five minutes every day, following the instruction manual one baby step at a time, it’s impossible not to a hundred percent complete that Lego set.
Use the five-minute rule, you end up with exactly the same result
Will you block out a big chunk of time out of your life to build the Lego setting in one sitting, or you use the five-minute rule, you end up with exactly the same result, a fully assembled Lego set. Last week, the secret I shared was how powerful it is to follow a proven step-by-step methodology, when selling on eBay. I was not saying you have to follow my methodology for selling on eBay.
Just needs to be a proven formula
Whether you follow my methodology or anybody else’s, it just needs to be a proven formula. And preferably a proven formula with case studies from others who have followed the step-by-step formula and got the success that you want. The case studies prove that other people can follow the step-by-step instructions and get the result that you want.

Every day in my diary, I’ve a pop-up that reminds me to add the words ‘five-minute rule’ to any large task. As it’s easy to do five minutes on a task, whereas chunking out a large part of your day out of your life can be all too easy just to put off.

Anybody can find five minutes in a day to move forward with a project that has a step-by-step methodology. Some other examples of how I use the five-minute rule in my life is, as anybody that has been following me for awhile would know that my main hobby in my life is building and flying radio-controlled planes, preferably jets. Every day, when I’m home, I spend a minimum of five minutes per day in the shed building and working on my planes.

Kind of got around 30 planes and that’s after selling many to make more space for others. You know, sure, you know, my wife will tell you she’s the first one to tell you that the five-minute rule in the shed very often gets extended. However, that’s all part of it. If you do more than the five minutes, awesome. Your goal will be achieved quicker. But if you do just five minutes, you can get to bed each night knowing you’ve won.
If you’ve done your five minutes, you’ve moved forward
And that’s so important. If you’ve done your five minutes, you’ve moved forward. And that’s what it’s all about. Same goes, you know, with flying my planes. Every day I spend five minutes on my flight simulator, practicing aerobatics. And although it was never a goal, three weeks ago, I was tested in an award on instructor rating, And now I’m one of the 84 instructors in Australia.

All because of the five-minute rule. Another example is doing a tax return. Let’s say your accountants give you a big, long list of statements and information that they need. And instead of blocking out a huge chunk of time, just allocate five minutes per day. It does not matter what the task is. The five-minute rule is incredibly powerful, for achieving goals.
