Number six-lesson – Online Success

– Hi guys, Neil Waterhouse. Today I want to share with you my number six lesson for online success which I’ve learned from being in business for over 30 years. Stuck on my office wall are the letters SIWISNT, which stands for Success is what or who I say no to. And this isn’t just for business.

It’s for all aspects of life, from our business to our health to our friends, to our parents, our partners, and even our hobbies. Throughout life, we’re continuously bombarded with shiny new objects, and every time we allocate part of our life to the next shiny object, we have to take away time from something else. Time of course is finite. If we give our time to anything new, we have to allocate less time to something else.

Online Success

And of course the secret to almost everything in life including online success is mastery. And the easiest way to master anything is from continuous, small baby steps. If you go out and spend more time with your children, this again requires saying no to many of the distractions that continuously come up.

If your goal is to build an online business, mastery again comes from continuous, small baby steps. And it requires saying no to all those time-sucking distractions that come up. One of my favorite Warren Buffet quotes, is the difference between successful people and really successful people, is really successful people say no to almost everything. It’s exactly the same with selling online. Less is always more.

Make money online

There’s so many opportunities these days to make money online, from social media like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google, Pinterest, as well as drop-shipping, selling used items, importing, private labeling, et cetera, et cetera.

As the host and founder of the the four largest Ebay and Amazon Meetup groups in Australia, as well as a Platinum Roundtable member, I continuously see the distinction between the most successful sellers, and the people who want to be successful.

And the distinction is, the most successful sellers lock in and focus on one task. Then they master it, and then they outsource it. On the other side of the scale, I see lots of people who continually chase the next silver object.

Success is what or who you say no to

They find it, they start it, and as soon as the first, second, or third hurdle appears, rather than find the solution, they go searching for the next shiny object. And then they want to do that again until they find the next hurdle. And then again they search for the next shiny object.

They just continually go around, around, around on this cycle. If they just mastered one of these strategies, they’d now be what many people would classify as an expert. This is the same with pretty much everything in life, you know, from photography to snow skiing to dog training to exercise to painting, gardening, surfing, to building businesses, it’s all the same.

The secret is to do more of less things. Find what you want to do, do more of that, and do less of everything else. You know the bottom line: success is what or who you say no to. That’s all for this week. Please scroll down and leave a comment below. Until next week, list more, sell more. This is Neil Waterhouse.

  1. Neil
I have been following your mail on the internet. I currently sell mostly vintage (new condition) sunglasses and vintage LP records.

I have available to me 1000’s of shelf pull products from the drug store chains in the USA. Most of it is ” seasonal shelpulls”
I can wholesale these products to onlin sellers so they can sell these same items at almost 1/2 the price that people like Walmart sell for. How can I exploit this contact. The buyers would have to be able to buy at least 2 pallets of merchandise at a time in original pack boxes.

  2. Really wise, sage advice Neil! Thanks, I needed to hear that again.
Have noticed that the really successful people often are only good at 1 thing it seems, but they are REALLY good at it.
